Whores have been immortalized across all mediums as muses and subject of art throughout history. It’s time to acknowledge and immortalize sex workers as creators of art and culture in our region. Amused draws attention to the ideal muse that the sex worker has represented for hundreds of years. This exhibition celebrates 10 black, queer and trans leaders of the local Ballroom community, iconizing their faces, and including interviews in the show catalog as well as featuring works by 10 regional artists with lived experience in the sex trade.
This is being produced with help from MO HO Justice Coalition, whose mission is to protect the freedom, safety, and well-being of sex workers in Missouri via advocacy, community building, mutual aid, healing justice, and education. We do this work with an unapologetic commitment to Black, trans, queer, disabled, and neurodivergent women and people. Thanks to the Luminary and the Warhol Foundation for funding this endeavor.
Printed catalogs will be for sale featuring the Ballroom Portrait Series & Interviews as well as artist bio's and documentation of the pieces included in the show available at the opening.
